Serving on a Visiting Committee: Revisits Visiting Committee Resources

WASC accreditation is based on a six-year accreditation cycle, with a full Self-Study visit occurring every six years. Please refer to Understanding the WASC Accreditation Cycle for more in-depth information regarding the accreditation cycle. The materials listed below pertain to visits other than the full Self-Study visits. Please visit the Self-Study VC Chair and Self-Study VC Member pages for materials pertaining to the full Self-Study visits.

International schools have different procedures and in some cases, a different accreditation cycle.

Three-Year Term Revisits

A Three-Year Term Revisit is typically a two-and-1/2-day visit by a two- to five-member committee which takes place during the third year of a Three-Year Term as a result of the last WASC visitation. The team writes a visiting committee report and completes a confidential accreditation status recommendation with a justification statement.

Note: Visiting Committee expenses are submitted to the WASC office for reimbursement.

The status options available as a result of this visit are (1) granting three years of accreditation, (2) granting three years of accreditation with a special report required the following year, (3) granting three years of accreditation with a special visit required the following year, or (4) accreditation may be withheld.

Midterm (Mid-cycle) Reviews

Schools that receive a status of accreditation with a required midterm (mid-cycle) review host the midterm review during the third year of the six-year cycle. A midterm review is a one-day visit conducted by a two-member visiting team. The team writes a visiting committee report and completes a confidential Accreditation Status Recommendation with a justification statement.

As a result of this review, the six-year status of accreditation is either confirmed to full as a result of a successful Midterm Review, or a special follow-up revisit or report may be required in one year.

Note: Visiting Committee expenses are submitted to the WASC office for reimbursement. Overnight hotel stays are not typically associated with a one-day visit.

Limited-Term Revisits

A Limited-Term Revisit is typically a one-day visit by a two-member committee during the final year of the one- or two-year term. The team writes a visiting committee report and completes a confidential accreditation status recommendation with a justification statement.

Note: Limited-Term Revisits in Hawaii, the Pacific Islands, and East Asia are typically two-and-1/2 day visits.

Note: Visiting Committee expenses are submitted to the WASC office for reimbursement. Overnight hotel stays are not typically associated with a one-day visit.

Accreditation status recommendation options available to the Revisit Committee will depend on the accreditation term the school was granted as a result of their last visit and where they are in the WASC six-year cycle.

The status options are as follows:

  • Year One of the Self-Study Cycle:
    • ― Accreditation granted with a progress report and two-day visit in two years
    • ― One-year probationary accreditation with a progress report and two-day visit in one year
    • ― Accreditation withheld
  • Year Two of the Self-Study Cycle:
    • ― Accreditation granted with a progress report and two-day visit in one year
    • ― Accreditation withheld
  • Year Four of the Self-Study Cycle:
    • ― Accreditation granted with a self-study in two years
    • ― Accreditation withheld

Schools that receive a one- or two-Year Limited-Term as a result of their full self-study are automatically required to participate in a two-day, mid-cycle visit at the three-year mark in the cycle.

Revisits do not take place during the fifth year of the accreditation cycle as schools are busy preparing for their next full self-study. Therefore, a recommendation of status cannot take a school to the five-year point.

Special Visits

Occasionally a special visit is required for a particular school. This is typically a one-day, two-member visit. A Visiting Committee Report and a Justification Statement are required.

Note: Visiting Committee expenses are submitted to the WASC office for reimbursement. Overnight hotel stays are not typically associated with a one-day visit.

Substantive Change Visits

If a changes of a substantive nature take place a visit may be required.

Note: Visiting Committee expenses are submitted to the WASC office for reimbursement. Overnight hotel stays are not typically associated with a one-day visit..
